Marie-Claire Bretherton

Marie Claire is the Executive Headteacher of Mount Street Academy in Lincolnshire, Regional Director for CfBT Schools Trust, National Leader of Education, and leader of the Kyra Teaching School Alliance – a partnership of over fifty schools focused on their collective improvement and succeeding for all children. Along with her colleagues, she is driven to ensure that every school and member of staff in the partnership is ambitious for children, and that Lincolnshire’s children grow to be well-rounded, well-educated citizens with a passion for learning and with the skills to succeed in a changing world.

In 2013 Marie-Claire and her team successfully built and opened a new Primary academy in Lincoln City, which was judged by OfSted to be Outstanding in 2015. Most recently Marie-Claire led the rapid turnaround of one of the poorest performing schools in England, which moved from Special Measures to Good in less than 18 months. She is also the Executive Headteacher of Mount Street Academy, which has been judged to be Outstanding twice by Ofsted, recognised as a National Support School, and is the founder school of the Kyra Teaching School Alliance and the Kyra Research School.

Marie-Claire has appeared before the House of Common’s Education Select Committee (inquiry into Academies and Free Schools), is a member of the Lincolnshire Learning Partnership, chair of the Lincolnshire Teaching Schools Together Board and – through the work of Kyra and its schools – has contributed articles to national and international publications.
